Is today.

They say time flies when you’re having fun and I guess thats true because I leave to go home tomorrow morning.

These past few days have been jammed packed with activities including multiple trips to the silk market where we had to deal with haggling salesladies trying to sell you knockoff goods. That place hardens you. The first day we went there it was way too crowded, it was almost claustrophobic. The second time we went there it was much less crowded and enjoyable. We spent almost all day there, not wanting to eat to take time away from valuable shopping.

We also have been to quite a few events. Ronda, Val and I have been to track and field to watch the women’s 100m finals, to diving, weightlifting and last night we saw the USA men’s basketball team trounce on Australia by 30 points. The coolest by far was the track and field, since we were able to see the bird’s nest from the stands. It was packed with 91,000 people. Pretty crazy.

Today our plans were to go to the Great Wall, and we left this to the last minute, which might not have been the best idea. We woke up this morning and it is pouring here. Apparently, the storm is supposed to last just for today, which is just oh so convenient since its my last day here. Maybe we’ll go to the Forbidden City instead. We have to make it back by 7pm to watch our roommate dive in the finals of the 10m platform.

Its surreal that this whole Olympic experience will be done in a day. Yesterday Val and I were walking and talking about how just a few months ago we didn’t know if we were even going to be here. Bejing seemed like a foreign concept and now our time here is almost over.

People will ask me, what was your experience? What was it like?

I don’t think it can be put into words. Being an athlete here at the Games is amazing. Yesterday we went to an ambassor dinner and I ate dinner with Michelle Kwan sitting next to me. You get to meet and see people who are heroes and celebrities. You get to put faces to names and see what kind of people they are. You become one of those heroes.

Being here has inspired me. Before I came, my dad said that this experience will change me life, and I think thats really true. The experience I have had is one that only a select few will ever have. Add that to the Games being held here in Beijing and the number gets even smaller.

Most inspiring are the sports events. Watching the pure emotion of people in the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat is indescribable. It inspires you to work harder and to want to achieve more. It reminds you why you worked so hard to get to where you are today.

Now that I’m going home, I can apply what I’ve learned and seen here to my normal life. When I get home it will be a new chapter in my book of life, but I will never forget this experience.

Thank you again to everyone who helped me get to where I am today.

Love
Sayaka

Today marks the last day of judo competition, with the men and women’s heavyweight divisions.

I’m sure you all know, but my teammate and roommate Ronda Rousey took bronze in the women’s 70kg division 2 days ago! Watching her was really inspiring for me. She fought really really hard and I thought she was going to win the gold, but bronze is just as good as gold. Now that she’s done, we can really enjoy the games!!!

Yesterday after Suzuki lost we were all bummed so we left the tournament to go find an Olympic Store. We ended up going to this shopping mall where I bought many items for cheap. (I can’t disclose what I bought because one of the items is Stephanie’s birthday present). Bargaining with the ladies in the stores is exhausting for me, and I’m sure its exhausting for them too.

Today we are planning to go to the tournament, watch the judo for a bit, then go shopping some more at the silk market.

Tomorrow Ronda and I have tickets to go see Men’s Water Polo. Should be interesting to watch 7 foot men try to drown each other. Why is it that all the water polo men look the same??

Sorry I dont have that many interesting things to say, but hopefully after we shop and go to the great wall, I’ll have more updates.

Talk to you guys soon

The trip is on it’s home stretch. Today is our final day in Beijing. Tomorrow we will be on a plane with a destination of San Francisco International Airport. I think the majority of use were relieved. We are all glad to be finally going home. We definitely loved being here and are thankful for this opportunity given to us… but home has a nice sound.

For the past few days since my last post, it’s all been pretty much the same routine. Except yesterday, after Adler was eliminated and after Suzuki lost, Asanuma Sensei, Sayaka, Marti, Michael, Kayla, Ronda and I went to the Fashion Market to check out Olympic Stores. (Sayaka found the locations online). We ended up buying a bunch of stuff and checking out the market, which is very similar to the silk market (just cleaner and not crowded).

After spending quite a few time there, we all went to the Bank of America house which is a place where athletes can bring their friends and family (limited number of course and only for American athletes) for food, drinks, Internet, etc. We ate dinner there and had some beer and enjoyed ourselves. Then Marti, Michael, Asanuma SEnsei and I walked to the USA House (which is very similar to Bank of America house) to check out the official USA apparel. I bought a few things for the family, and I have to go back today. After that, we came back to the dorm to only turn around and go to this bar down the street.

We spent a good amount of time there hanging out and talking (All the Hopefuls and Bobby). It was about 2 in the morning when we all finally called it a night.

OH! I almost forgot to mention the most exciting thing out of the entire trip! Ronda Rousey won 3rd place. HISTORY! She’s the first American female in the history of our sport to win a medal at the Olympics!! She fought 2 days ago. We were all going to go out to celebrate at this club called Club Bud which is put on by Budweiser where they serve free beer and everything until 3am. But we couldn’t get our stuff together and everything so we never made it there. We got in the cab and drove out to the address listed but no club. So we ended up turning around and coming back to the dorms, but no more than 2 seconds after deciding to turn around, I spotted the club. It was 2 buildings down from where we thought the club was. How embarrassing. But let me tell you, Marti was so frustrated that entire night because she wanted to go to the club so bad. I only went because she didn’t want to ride in a cab alone. So being the good friend I am, I went. I was kind of relieved that we didn’t find the place. I didn’t want to stay out all night.

But that’s about all we’ve been up to recently. Today Michael, Marti, Sensei and I are going to go watch field hockey. We got 4 tickets. And inside that venue there’s a super store of Olympic stuff. So we are excited about that.

TIME: 0927hrs

Yesterday, Sunday August 3rd, started out just like every other day except for the fact that I actually slept until 0730. Once I woke up, I checked my email as usual. After breakfast I finished checking my email before practice. Practice went well… women’s team coach Israel Hernandez worked with the girls on some drills separately. After practice, all of us Olympic Hopefuls decided to wait and catch the 1500 bus. Once we got to the village, Sayaka met us and took us to her place. It was a long walk!! I’m not sure how long of a walk, but it was a trip. (I don’t have a clock here, so I lose all sense of time while here).

In the Olympic Village, the first thing that we did was go check out Sayaka, Ronda and Val’s little apartment. By this time, it was only me, Marti and Michael. After briefly checking out everyones room, we all decided to go look around. Because there hasn’t been a lot of free time for the Olympians, they hadn’t explored the village as much as they’d like. Once we started walking around we ended up at the entertainment center. We began out fun by challenging each other at a little match of air hockey. I think Me, Ronda and Marti dominated our games. And let me say… Ronda and I are tied with 1 win a piece and I beat the champion Marti! haha =) After air hockey we migrated to shuffle board which Marti and I rocked at! We swept 2 teams… Sayaka-Val & Ronda-Val. Can you tell that we’re a competitive group? Once we finished that, we walked through the fitness center and saw the cyclists working out along with the Cuban volleyball players. Once we visited that, we went to the Olympic Village store. At first I didn’t want to buy anything because we still had to go to the silk market, but I caved in. I bought shot glasses for Mom, Jeff and Bachan & Jichan. AND! I got these cool looking cards for my collection. That’s about all that I bought. I didn’t want to buy anything else because I’m going to wait to see what merchandise they have at the tournament. After purchasing our goody’s, we hopped on the 1830 bus back to BNU (Beijing Normal University).

I’m not sure what we are going to do today. I think after practice we are going to try and go to the silk market. We keep hearing stories about it and how we have to bargain with the people… so we’re looking forward to that experience!

Well even though I’m done competing, the Games have just begun. Luckily judo gets done in the next few days so that the team can enjoy watching other sports and not just judo.

These past few days have been really exciting. Yesterday our teammate Taylor Takata had a great day and ended up going 2-2 and placing 9th. He beat some really tough players in the first few rounds and we thought that he may end up in the medal rounds.

Today Val fought and so did Ryan, and Val went 1-1, losing to Isabel Fernandez who was the Olympic Champ back in 2000. Ryan lost a really close match to Mongolia but fought really tough.

Countries that you would never hear of normally won medals yesterday and today, including an awesome peformance by a man from Azerbeijan (don’t even know if i’m spelling this correctly) who chucked the Korean in the finals of the men’s 73kg like a little baby.

The Olympics are an amazing experience and there are many ups and downs. Today there were so many suprises in judo, especially in the women’s division (57kg) where the reigning world and olympic champions both lost. A virtually unknown Italian won the division.

It just goes to show that anything can happen and that no one can be taken for granted at this level. Judo is a sport where its not over until that buzzer rings and you can get thrown in the last second even though you’re up be a wazari, 5 yukos and 10 kokas.

I’m excited to see what will happen tomorrow and now that I can really enjoy the games, its even better.

These last few days I’ve been hanging out with my dad and Asanuma Sensei, but my dad goes home tomorrow. We went to some authentic Chinese restaurants, which was an interesting experience. They even had turtle on the menu (needless to say, we didn’t try it)

Anyways, hope this email doesn’t bore people but I’m gonna keep writing until I leave (which is in about 2 weeks)

Keep me updated on whats going on at home!

Love

Travis Stevens (-81kg) went 2-2 today. He looked pretty good… had a good day. Finals between Japan and France in the -63kg was probably the most awesome match that I’ve watched in the entire tournament. Japan had the most beautiful throw that I’ve seen.

The tournament is pretty much the same day to day just different divisions. Tomorrow Ronda competes and Brian Olsen (-70kg and -90kg). Ronda is expected to be in the finals… so we’ll see how it goes.

I am going to end this a little short because I’m going to go kill Michael in judo. I downloaded this demo video game that’s judo on my computer and so far the score between us is 1-1. So I’m going to break the tie. Wish me luck

It’s been a few days since my last post. Two days of judo have gone by and so far the USA has a record of 4-6. We haven’t taken any medals…

Yesterday -48kg and -60kg divisions competed and let me tell you… what a sight!! Being able to watch all the preliminaries and finals has made me want the Olympics so much more. I want to be able to celebrate after taking a medal AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES! I want that. It just makes my dreams even that much brighter. Sayaka went 0-2. First round she drew Ryoko Tani, 2 time Olympic gold medalist, 2 time Olympic silver medalist and 7 time World Champ. She fought Tani well, she went the distance (full 5 minutes) and only lost by a yuko (second lowest score). Since Tani made the semi-finals, Sayaka was able to fight in the reprecharge for 3rd. First round in the reprecharge, Sayaka had to fight China! She didn’t win… But it was quite an experience.

I loved watching the 2 days of judo. I can’t really explain how much it’s meant and has impacted my life … I want to be there one day…

Other than judo, I haven’t done anything. From 1200-2100ish we are at the tournament venue. Just watch judo all day. But before the tournament, on Saturday (day 1), Marti, Michael and I went for a run. This morning Michael and I went for a run and then I biked afterwards with Marti and Kayla (and eventually mike) in the lobby of our building. Okay, you’re wondering why are we biking in the lobby. Well there’s 4 stationary bikes in the lobby of our building. So we used those. OH! I forgot to mention the DRASTIC change since the trip started. The WEATHER changed from the hot and muggy to torrential down pour. Between the preliminaries and finals, we had McD’s again. BUT we had to walk and we were soaked!!! There was probably an inch of water on the ground. I have video of it. I’ll post later with the other ones. It’s still raining and thundering outside. The only good thing about this storm is that the air will be nice and clear afterwards for a few days. I’m excited to see how that is.

Tomorrow’s competition is -57kg (Valerie Gotay) and -73 (Ryan Resser). Should be good… =)

So its 6 am here in China on August 10, the day after I competed. Last night while writing my previous email, I was a bit delirious from lack of sleep, but now I feel much better.

Today begins day two of the judo competition. Should be exciting, with the ever competitive 66kg men’s weight class and women’s 52kg weight class.

Something interesting that I noticed yesterday was the everyone in 48 and 60 that placed top 7 were from different countries. These countries were Korea, Romania, Canada, Uzbekistan, Russia, Japan, Israel, Netherlands, Austria, France, Argentina, Peoples Republic of Korea, Hungary, Portugal, Great Britain, Cuba.

This just shows the depth of judo, if 16 different countries can come in the top 7 in each different weight. Who would’ve ever thought that someone from Uzbekistan would be a Olympic bronze medalist. That may be their country’s only medal, and it was in judo. At this stage, everyone is tough and no country can be underestimated.

Did I mention to you that my dad is here now? He came a few days ago and it was awesome having him at the tournament, where I could hear him yelling for me during my matches. Him, Asanuma Sensei, Annie and our other friend Mike Eldred went to eat Chinese food last night for dinner. Its nice to be able to eat again!

Well, now that my competition is over I get to relax a little bit. I may go do some shopping and buy some gifts.

I can’t say thank you enough for all your kind words and emails. It really means a lot to me knowing that so many people are behind me.

Sayaka

I competed today and now it is 10:15pm here in China and I am exhausted.

After getting back from the opening ceremonies last night at 11pm or so, I slept a little bit, and weighed in at 7am. After I ate I went back to my room and rested for a minute and took the 10 o’clock bus over to the venue. Started warming up at 11:15 or so for my big match against Tani.

I wasn’t really nervous as much as I was excited competing against her. In my mind I had built her up to be super-human because of all her accomplishments, but in reality, she was just like you and me. One thing I definitely have to say is that she is a very smart, experienced player. Once she scored a yuko on me, she wasn’t going to take ANY chances and was playing very cautious. This is what smart judo players do when they have the lead.

Nonetheless, I lost the match, but I felt like I gave it my all. I was able to hang the whole time with the legendary Tamura and what a way to experience my first Olympic Games!

After my match with her, I fought a strong Chinese girl in the loser’s bracket. We were even until the last minute when I got thrown for ippon with a cross leg grab. I just lost my focus for two split seconds and got caught. It only takes a few seconds for a mistake like that to cost you the match, and in this case, it did.

All in all, I am happy that I competed the way I did, but still dissapointed that I lost. For me, it doesn’t matter if its a local tournament or the Olympics, losing is still dissapointing. But I feel like I gave it my best effort and thats all I could do.

The competition still has 6 more days to go and I am looking forward to seeing such great judo.

I’ll write more to you soon.

Thanks for all your messages!

Sayaka
