Dedication

In November of 1998, the East Bay Judo Institute lost one of its most valued, long-time members, Nate Cutler. Nate is remembered for his love and devotion to his family, friends, and to the practice of Judo, to which he applied himself diligently as a student, competitor, and instructor. As a student, Nate set a standard for the other students with his unflagging enthusiasm and infectious energy. His willing sacrifice of time and effort as an instructor and coach inspired his peers.

Competitively, Nate participated in many local tournaments and became a United States Senior National Masters Champion. In addition to his Judo achievements, Nate excelled in his academic pursuits. A lifetime learner, Nate trekked to Tibet and India to explore his scholarly interests. Nate eventually earned the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies.

In his memory, we have instituted the Nathan S. Cutler Memorial Scholarship which recognizes Judo students and/or competitors whose efforts and interests mirror Nate’s own. Thanks primarily to the generous support of the Cutler Family, The East Bay Judo Institute is pleased to offer these scholarships to the members of the Daiheigen Judo Yudanshakai that Nate spent so much time and energy working with.

Nate was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and began his Judo career in England. His practice of Judo has taken him to various cities in the U.S., and finally to EBJI. Since he bid us farewell, this website has always been dedicated to his memory. Check in periodically for more information on the scholarships.
